  3. Yes, I know. I'd be in greater conflict if we were talking about Teilhard de Chardin or Graham Greene. It helps when I remember that de Chardin was a paleontologist, and that Greene was lousy at his chosen religion. Still, actual Popes? I have to draw the line somewhere. Lewis I'd be okay with because I like The Silver Chair and That Hideous Strength

  6. Both excellent. And the argument might be made that JPII was more responsible for the fall of the Soviet Union than any other individual. I wouldn't make that argument, but it is out there, and it is certainly truer for him than it is for Ronald Reagan. My problem is that although it is true that Soviet totalitarianism was an oppressive false consciousness, so's what brought it down. Supernatural people and the dictatorship of the proletariat are both made up things to make people do what you want them to do.

Also, people be hatin' on Ratzinger, but don't forget that JPII had the Defender of the Faith basically runing the show.

  7. Well, he's going to get the senior citizen vote, anyway. I'd be surprised if he makes the top ten.

  8. Mrs. Houck! Talk about a dark horse. That was an inspiration, all right. I don't know how I feel about Madeline L'Engle though.

  9. Medeline L'Engle the Smithie! Actually, my favorite of her works is Crosswicks Journals. If you haven't read it yet, you should!
